The earthquake triggered powerful tsunami waves that reached heights of up to 40.5 meters (133 ft).
The confirmed death toll is 15,883 as of July 10, 2013, 3000 bodies have never been recovered.
Miyagi Blue is a portrait gallery, offered to appease the countries grief left in the wake of the Tsunami.
The palette
Prussian Blue pigment is used to absorb radioactive cesium from contaminated water and soil at Fukushima. (Non contaminated) Prussian blue will be used almost exclusively to paint the portraits.
Objects from the mountains of debris that remain in devastated areas will be ground with the Prussian blue creating a symbolic bridge between earth and sea, a pathway for the shadows of the missing to return home.

Each of the 30 portraits represent 100 people who were never recovered. The portraits are based on work with the local community in Miyagi, images, stories, recollections, and artifacts of their lives.
